80 Years after the Liberation of Liège

9 September 2024

Queen Mathilde was present at the "Enclos des fusillés de la Citadelle" in Liège for the 80th commemoration of the city's liberation in 1944.

At the enclos 419 persons are buried, among them chaplain Mathieu Voncken, who were killed by the Wehrmacht or Waffen SS. During WWII, the citadal was used as an execution spot for resistants.

This visit was supposed to have been made by King Philippe. Because he became ill over the weekend, he was replaced by Queen Mathilde.
