Microcostatus Elisabethianus

Two Belgian scientists, Bart Van de Vijver (Plantentuin Meise) & Luc Ector (Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology) have discovered a new algae species on the Crozet archipelago, in the Southern Indian Ocean, 2400 kilometers from Antarctica.

They named it "microcostatus elisabethianus" after the Belgian crown princess.

The Belgian polar base on Antactica is named "Princess Elisabeth Base". In this cute video from 2009, crown prince Philippe & his daughter Elisabeth take a look at a scale model of the base. Elisabeth (7 at the time) addresses the camera for the first time whishing the scientists good luck.
