State Visit #3: Japan

Shortly after 7:00 the royal delegation with 230 guests (ministers, business men and women, scientists, artists, entrepreneurs, royal staff and 29 journalists) departed from Melsbroek airport.



Monday 10 October 2016

After a 15 hour flight with stops in Russia and Mongolia, the couple arrived at Tokyo Airport, Japan at 08:00 local time.








Private visit to the Nezru Shrine, one of the oldest Shinto worship places.

Clotilde Boël accompanied the Queen on this trip as her lady-in-waiting.

During this first day the King & Queen also had a private meeting with Japanese victims of the Brussels terror attacks, 22 March 2016, and their relatives.

Queen Mathilde told a journalist that during this state visit she read "L'éloge de l'ombre" (In Praise of Shadows), Junichiro Tanizaki's essay on traditional Japanese aesthetics. She loved it: "A work that allows you to really understand Japanese society."

The King & Queen left Japan. Their flight had a delay of 7 hours due to bad weather conditions and had to land in China instead of Mongolia.
