Jewels: Mathilde's Rings

At her 1999 engagement to Crown Prince Philippe, Mathilde d'Udekem received a gold ring with diamonds and an impressive dark ruby from Burma. Philippe had it commissioned at Wolfers Jewellers in Brussels.

Ten years later, in July 2009 Princess Mathilde received an equally impressive diamond and sapphire ring, also commissioned at Wolfers.

In 2022 Mathilde had her second ring altered to a new design.

Apart from her wedding band, these are the only two rings Mathilde usually wears.

However there are three more, a kunzite & diamond ring, a sapphire ring and one with a green gemstone that are worn occasionally.

  1. Looks like the sapphire is still the same and they redesigned the band – to make it smaller and easier to wear? Mathilde’s old sapphire ring hasn’t been seen from mid-December till now. Very unusual, it used to be her favourite.
The design indeed looks like Leysen or De Greef. Now, I don’t have their budget to spend on jewels so it’s probably stingy, but I wouldn’t go for a new sapphire ring with an almost identical stone if I already have one. So I hope they also redesigned the old ring and mounted a nice emerald or aquamarine in the old band. Or another possibility: the old ring got lost and they went for something similar.

    1. I agree it looks like the same whopper sapphire. I do like the more delicate design of this new one.
