Expo "Emile Claus: Prins van het luminisme"

7 January 2025

Queen Mathilde visited the exhibition "Emile Claus. Prince of Luminism" at Mudel in Deinze.

It were the sons of Deinze's mayor, Rutger De Reu who handed the Queen the traditional bouquet of flowers.

One of the paintings on display, "Twee gestrafte vrienden", is actually on loan from the Royal Family. It was bought at the start of Claus's career by King LĂ©opold II.

Both Philippe and Mathilde are big admirers of Claus's work, as curator Wim Lammertijn told the press.

In Claus's heyday, the early 1920s, Queen Elisabeth bought several of his works, which are today still in the collection of the royal family, like this famous one, "The picnic".

Emile Claus died on 5 June 1924, a day before he was supposed to receive a visit of Queen Elisabeth at his home because he was to receive the title of baron.
