Flashback: UNICEF Visit to Niger

As Honorary President of UNICEF Belgium, Princess Mathilde went on a five day humanitarian visit to Niger, at the time the second poorest country on the planet. She was accompanied by Minister for Development Cooperation, Marc Verwilghen. Central themes during this visit were education for girls and the role women play in the local society.

Meeting with President Mamadou Tandja of Niger. They were able to talk about AIDS and genital mutilation and about the great poverty the country was suffering.

Visit to local projects in the village Birni N'Gouare.
 


18 February 2004

Visit to local projects in Maradi.


Mathilde received a horse as a gift from local leaders. She donated it to the poorest family of the village.



19 February 2004

Visit to desert city Agadez with official visits to the Sultan and the traditional leaders.
