Flashback: Visit to Vlaams-Brabant

5 March 2013

Prince Philippe & Princess Mathilde visited the towns Gooik and Herne.



In Gooik they visited the educational center Paddenbroek.




The provincial visit ended with a stop at community center De Clam where the mayors of the neighbouring towns had gathered to meet the princely couple.






Local watercolour artist Herman Dewit presented a book with his work to the couple.





Among the guests at the reception were Mathilde's uncle, Count Raoul d'Udekem and his wife, Françoise de Maere d'Aertrycke, inhabitants of Herne. The count told a local reporter that they'd been able to have a short chat with their niece at the reception. He added that Mathilde is frequently in touch with one of his daughters and that via her she knew about everything that had been going on in his family, like a bad fall he'd made at the beginning of the year. 


And then there was a final walkabout to say goobye.

Flashback: Nutricia

 28 September 2001

Crown Prince Philippe & 8 month pregnant Princess Mathilde visited nutrition factory Nutricia in Bornem.


The factory offered the royal couple an appropriate basket full of useful products for new parents.

The director of the board, René Mannekens was also the founder of the Oost-Vlaanderen branch of the King Baudouin Foundation.









Mathilde's first baby, Elisabeth, was born 4 weeks later.

Book: Een kikker om te kussen

Princess Mathilde visited "Le Wolf", a center for children & literature in Brussels.

She read from the book "Qui veut embrasser la grenouille?" (in French) and its Dutch version, "Een kikker om te kussen". The book is a collection of children's stories for which Mathilde wrote the preface.

Flashback: Trade Visit to the United Arab Emirates

Prince Philippe presided a Belgian trade mission to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Mathilde was present for just a part of the mission. In Dubai she visited the world's largest aquarium, and she adressed the students of Abu Dhabi's female university.

Jewels: Fabiola's Brooch

Around 2011, Queen Fabiola (1928-2014) gifted a 19th century diamond brooch to Mathilde. 


According to Vincent Meylan, King Baudouin bought the brooch for his wife in 1983 at an auction in Geneva.


Mathilde has been wearing the impressive brooch for big occasions.
