Book: Achter de muren van het paleis

Royal reporter Wim Dehandschutter, who's been faithfully reporting on all things royal in Belgium since the birth of Prince Gabriel (August 2003), has published his first book. "Behind Palace Walls" as its title translates into English claims to give "a unique insider's look into the life of King Philippe and his family". It was first published in October 2024.

In reality it's a concise summary of about all there is to know about Philippe, Mathilde and their four children, backed by historical facts. It tells us about their royal profession, their entourage, their personalities and events in their professional en private lives. Nothing in this book is actually new information or gives any in-depth view on who these people are, but all that is mentioned is correct and reliable information, written in a very accessible way as FAQs & answers, in line with Wim Dehandschutter's much appreciated style of reporting for bestselling Flemish media. There's also some info on Albert & Paola, Astrid, Laurent and their families.

It's not a coffee table book, photos are generally small and not always the best quality but some of them were made by the author himself, who's accompanied the Belgian King & Queen at many an event and visit.

If you don't know a lot about Mathilde and her family, haven't read/watched the interviews with her so far and think scrolling through this blog for a long time isn't practical then this book is just the thing for you. If you're waiting for a real biographical portrait of Mathilde then this isn't the one ... But I guess it will take an investigative journalist and a long wait until Mathilde isn't Queen anymore for that dream to come true.

The book is only available in Dutch, and so far it's doing very well in Flemish book sales.
