Both Queen Mathilde and her mother-in-law were at the Child Focus HQ in Brussels, where Mathilde officially took over from Paola as Honorary President of Child Focus.
Child Focus had been established in the wake of the Dutroux paedophile horrors. It was an initiative of Queen Paola, one of the few she was very implicated in. On this occasion she also said goodbye to the staff of the organisation.
During the visit it became clear there's no love lost between Paola and Mathilde. When Mathilde explicitly thanked Paola for her work, and looked at her, Paola kept staring straight ahead with a blank expression.
It's true that at the time the family relationships were at a particularly low point, but I think in the last few years things clearly improved, at the event Paola and Mathilde attended together last November they interacted warmly and Mathilde in the full version of her rtl interview for her birthday spoke highly of her mother-in-law and also showed the picture of her parents-in-law she keeps in her office
